OpenID and the Verisign Seatbelt

July 23, 2008

OpenID.net LogoDo you ever get tired of managing all the usernames and passwords that you use across the internet? Wouldn’t be nice if there was a single service that you could manage your credentials?

OpenID is here to help. The OpenID foundation was born out of the open source community to give users a single identity across the internet. It is free and you may already have an OpenID account. OpenID is still in the adoption phase but many large organizations have already adopted the technology. (Blogger, WordPress, Yahoo, to name a few). The technology is not owned by any single entity and getting and OpenID is very simple.

To use OpenID you will need to choose and OpenID provider that meets your needs and that you trust. OpenID is built to be a portable system and beyond that it is completely free and open source technology.

I chose to create my OpenID account with Verisign. Verisign has already established a trusted brand throughout the internet and they have a very useful Firefox plugin called OpenID Seatbelt.

OpenID is a very good thing for the internet as a whole and you should establish your account today. The OpenID.net website offers great information on usage and providers so I suggest starting there.
